This video, posted by Vice President JD Vance, raises a controversial question about Illinois law:

Can a non-U.S. citizen become a police officer and carry a firearm while on duty?

Illinois changed its law in 2023 to allow certain noncitizens to apply for police and sheriff's positions. However, there's an important condition that often gets lost in the political debate: applicants must also be authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, purchase, or otherwise possess a firearm.

That means the situation is more complicated than simply saying “illegal immigrants are now police officers.”

Federal law generally prohibits people who are unlawfully present in the United States from possessing firearms, and Illinois' own firearm requirements likewise exclude unlawfully present aliens from obtaining a FOID card.

At the same time, Illinois law does permit certain noncitizens who are legally authorized to work and legally permitted to possess firearms to pursue law-enforcement positions.

So what's really going on?

That's exactly what makes this story worth discussing.
